The Keta Municipal Hospital in the Volta region will soon have a 60-bed maternity block built thanks to funding from the MTN Ghana Foundation.
The project is anticipated to take 12 months to complete and will cost around $15.2 million in total.
The project will include a 20-bed Neonatal Care Unit in addition to a 40-bed maternity ward with emergency rooms, a first-stage ward, a delivery ward with recovery rooms, and a lie-in ward (NICU).
When everything is finished, the facility will also have two surgery rooms, a 20-bed mother's hostel, two consultation rooms, nurse offices, reception and outpatient department facilities, a laboratory, and a dispensary.
The remaining spaces include a restroom for medical professionals, a staff dining area, an anaesthetics room, an intensive care unit, and a scrub and sluice room.
"This hospital is a vital health institution giving healthcare to various towns in the Keta Municipality and its adjacent areas," MTN Ghana CEO Selorm Adadevoh remarked at the sod-cutting event.
Despite how crucial this facility is to the area, it nevertheless has a number of problems.
The existing maternity ward only has 20 beds, which is insufficient for the approximately 3,000 maternity and 684 NICU admissions per year, according to the authorities. Many patients at the institution are forced to endure subpar circumstances in order to survive their pregnancies due to the overwhelming demand for treatment.
"We are confident that when the facility is finished, it will provide many pregnant women and the employees with respite. Expectant moms who use this facility won't have to deal with the difficulties they have right now, he noted.
In his speech, Dr. Senanu Kwesi Dzokoto, the director of health services for the Volta region, thanked the MTN Ghana Foundation for funding the initiative.
The project, he claimed, "is a dream come true and would have a significant beneficial influence on the region's population's access to healthcare." The MTN Ghana Foundation was praised by Torgbui Sri II, the Awoemefia of Anlo State, for its contributions to enhancing healthcare services in Ghana.
This investment is a credit to your efforts and dedication to assisting communities, he remarked.
Numerous dignitaries, including the MTN Foundation Board Member, MTN Foundation personnel, and officials from the Keta Municipal Hospital, as well as the Awomefia of Anlo State Torgbu Sri II and members of the Anlo Traditional Council, attended the occasion.
Over 158 significant initiatives in the fields of health, education, and economic empowerment have been carried out since the MTN Ghana Foundation's founding in 2007 at a cost of more than $15 million.
