Tottenham backed to finally wear down rival and complete £30m deal for top Conte target
Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton is confident his old club will complete the transfer of Pedri Polo without paying his £40m release clause.
Spurs have been chasing a full-back at Sporting Lisbon in recent months. However, Daniel Levy is reluctant to pay for the release clause and the Portuguese side is sticking to the price.
Polo significantly upgrades right Antonio Conte. In fact, he has his 12 goals in his 23 appearances so far this season. But Tottenham had already turned down an offer that included a certain amount of money and one player in return.
Conte are unimpressed with what Matt Dougherty, Emerson Royale and Jed Spence have to offer and want to sign another full-back.
Talks about the polo are still ongoing and Hutton believes Spurs can finally get Sporting to agree to a £30m move.
When asked if the north London club would pull out and honor its buyout clause, he told Football Insider:
"It's not a big deal. I think they can do a deal for him around £30m. "He's an attacking full-back, probably a problem area for Tottenham this season and Conte seems keen to bring someone in.
"He's an attacking full-back who wants to move forward and fits the picture and the formation."
Tottenham move on Conte's future
Once Polo arrives in north London, he could be the first player in a string of deals if Conte commits his future to the club.
That's where the problem is at the moment. Conte is hesitant until he knows his signing is imminent, but Tottenham want the Italian to commit to staying before spending. Either way, with the window closing on Jan. 31 and the Spurs currently in free fall, things need to be sorted out quickly.
Conte's side sits fifth in the Premier League standings, five points behind fourth-placed Newcastle United.
But he will face a bitter clash with Manchester City on Thursday night after losing 2-0 at home to Arsenal in the North London derby.
