West Bromwich Albion defeated National League Chesterfield 4-0 in their FA Cup third-round rematch at The Hawthorns, mercilessly exposing the 70-place difference between the two teams.
Following John Swift's first goal, which was assisted by Tom Rogic and Jake Livermore, who scored the next two, and substitute Jovan Malcolm, who scored the fourth goal with a header.
The team led by Carlos Corberan improved to 10 wins in 12 games across all competitions. Swift was the lone survivor of the West Brom team that defeated Luton Town 3-2 in the Championship on Saturday. Jamie Andrews, 20, was given his professional debut by Corberan.
But in the Spirerites' first game since a 3-3 draw at Technique Stadium ten days prior, eight of each team's starting lineups were used. Grady Diangana's aerial charge on goalkeeper Lucas Covolan, who carried the ball over the goal line, resulted in West Brom's attempt being disallowed in the second minute.
Chesterfield lost a chance as Armando Dobra chose to dribble after collecting a square pass rather than shooting from inside the box. As Albion generated multiple opportunities to take the lead before halftime, the pressure was once again on the non-league team.
Swift got all of his angles correct to give Albion the lead in the 23rd minute after blowing one opportunity high and wide.
Jamie Grimes' careless clearing allowed Livermore to win the header over Darren Oldaker and feed Swift for a superb, left-footed curling goal from 16 yards. Swift's goal, his fourth of the year, snapped an 11-match goalless streak.
Diangana had a one-on-one opportunity when Swift's dinked pass split Chesterfield's defense, but Covolan palmed the ball away from him at close range. After thereafter, West Brom secured the draw with two goals in as many minutes after Reyes Cleary's low shot had missed the far post.
After some terrible defence by Chesterfield, Rogic increased their advantage in the 49th minute. Swift's 70-yard ball enabled Adam Reach to cross the goal line, and midfielder Rogic made up for Jeff King's hesitation by scoring from close range.
After the defense failed to clear Swift's corner, Livermore then scored in the 55th minute. Near the end, Akwasi Asante of Chesterfield squandered a one-on-one opportunity and shot the rebound against the crossbar.
Substitute In the opening minute of extra time, Malcolm headed Taylor Gardner-cross Hickman's into the net to seal the victory.
