Three minutes from time, Burnley's astonishing free-kick winner—Scott Twine's first goal for the club—gave the Championship leaders a 2-1 comeback victory over West Brom. Following his summer transfer from MK Dons, Twine has been limited to just five substitute appearances. Twine curled a set-piece into the top corner to defeat their tenacious opponents.
At Turf Moor, the Baggies took the lead in the seventh minute when Darnell Furlong beat Charlie Taylor to the near post and headed in a corner. However, 15 minutes from time, Nathan Tella quietly scored an equalizer to set up Twine's late winner.
Burnley's unbeaten home record, which dates back to last May, came under threat in the seventh minute as West Brom seized the lead thanks to a goal by Furlong only seconds after home midfielder Josh Cullen blocked Daryl Dike's header from a Swift corner.
When Swift broke in from the right and rolled a pass into Dike with 10 yards to go, Burnley could have been further behind. However, Cullen came back just in time to make an excellent block.
Then, in quick succession, Burnley had two penalty appeals denied. First, Ashley Barnes was brought down by Erik Pieters after Tella's delivery from the right, and then Josh Brownhill unsuccessfully claimed that Furlong shoved him in the back as they both advanced toward Connor Roberts' ball in.
Both teams experienced shaky defensive moments. Former Burnley defender Pieters nearly put Barnes' cross into his own net, but Alex Palmer made a great reaction save by deflecting the ball with his foot and onto the post.
Conor Townsend and Okay Yokuslu pressured Aro Muric into mishandling a Swift corner into the net at the other end, but referee Jarred Gillett ruled the goalkeeper had been fouled.
Before halftime, Barnes came close to tying the score twice. First, he deflected Ian Maatsen's shot into the net but was stopped by a slight offside, and second, he rose to shoot from Anass Zaroury's cross but hit the crossbar.
At the very end of the first half, Tella collided with Furlong and appealed for a penalty. Albion's players sprinted to argue with the Southampton loanee, who they believed had been brought down too easily.
After the break, Burnley remained aggressive in their pursuit of a goal, with Yokuslu diverting a cross-shot past the far post. After clearing a cross from Zaroury, Pieters got in the way of a Tella volley with his head, and substitute Manuel Benson missed the follow-up with a volley. The visitors had to defend fiercely. After that, Tella sped past Pieters to connect on Zaroury's through ball and score the equalizer.
