Dr. Kofi Amoah, president of the now-defunct Normalisation Committee, has been characterised by former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah as a guy who lacked respect for him while he was in charge of the national team.
Appiah said that Dr. Amoah attempted to persuade him to include Sulley Muntari and Kevin Prince Boateng in his team for the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be held in Egypt. Appiah was speaking on Prime Take with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai on the Joy News channel.
"[I should] bring Kevin Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari back to the Black Stars," Dr. Kofi Amoah urged. For what many deemed to be unsportsmanlike conduct during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Sulley Muntari and Kevin Prince Boateng were fired from the Black Stars.
For instance, Moses Armah Parker, a former member of the management committee, was assaulted by Sulley, who was then expelled from camp. Kevin, meanwhile, was fired for using derogatory language toward Appiah during a training session.
Although they both offered their apologies to the coach, Ghanaians, and the GFA, they are no longer on the squad.
But Dr. Amoah desired to have them return for the AFCON in Egypt. "He believed Sulley Muntari and Kevin Prince Boateng belonged on the team, but you have to wonder if these guys are actually competing and, if they are, if they are in peak condition to compete at that level.
"If you are better than the coach, you should have been the coach and be guiding the squad," the player responded. "I think they were very excellent guys, especially Sulley, who gives 100% of himself whenever he is on the team. But you don't tell me to go and bring them.
He seems to have pushed on include the 2013 AFCON semi-finalists in the team after they rejected his offer, which he believed was insulting to them.
He said that when he sought to emphasise the issue further, "it says you are trying to tell me I don't know my job, and his stance showed he has no respect."
He disclosed that despite the Normalization Committee chairman threatening to fire him if he failed to summon the pair, he remained unfazed.
"He threatened to fire me, but I assured him I wasn't worried about it. I've heard those threats before, but I'm not the kind of person who is affected by them," he said.
The current GFA leadership, led by Kurt Okraku, did not extend Kwasi Appiah's term, which expired in December 2019.
After Otto Addo left the position as head coach after leading the country to the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, he applied for the position and is now looking for a third stint with the national team.
