Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, a former minister of trade and industry, claimed that his headmaster came close to deboardingenizing him because of his outspokenness on matters that he felt crucial.

He claims that he organized a protest against a teacher at the Achimota School who was "misbehaving" at the time.

He said it provided a forum where other students may air their grievances about the accused instructor.

"Unknown to myself, I was also a radical thinker, so one of my instructors wanted me to stay a Day student. So when he misbehaved, I assisted in organising other students to demonstrate against him, and we set up a meeting with him at the Gyamfi Home, which is the house I was in. He was the target of several accusations. He then left the common area after becoming quite red-faced.

He continued by saying that his school prefect had told him that his teacher was quite dissatisfied with his strategy.

The politician said that the master had intended to kick him out of the boarding home but changed his mind after learning about his parents' diplomatic standing.

As his headmaster had stated on his report card, "were I not aware that his father is representing Ghana as an ambassador outside of the nation, I would have no qualms in recommending that you should be made a day student," he remarked, recalling the statement.

According to Dr. Spio-Garbrah, Jerry John Rawlings, the late former president, must have known about the incident because he resided nearby at the time.

He said that the occurrence may have had an impact on the late President's choice to choose him as the head of the NDC's media team so that they could "talk better to the people of Ghana."

The politician admitted that he and other kids were taught public service skills and recruited into a "young pioneer movement" together.

He believes that today's youngsters do not comprehend what it was like to be a pioneer in that era and claims that many young people just worry about expensive homes and vehicles.

He said that growing up, his mother would always highlight that serving the public meant serving the people, and it had always resonated with him.

From 2014 until 2017, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah served as the trade and industry minister in the Mahama government. Between 1998 to 2001, he served as the late President Jerry John Rawlings' minister of education. In 1994, he was also Ghana's ambassador to the United States of America.
