A Memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U.) between the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) has been linked to executing the KIC AgriTech Challenge Program at the regional level by training students in businesses under the KIC mentorship program.
Through the relationship, young people in the Bono Region and university students will receive training and be exposed to a wide range of opportunities in agri-entrepreneurship and innovation. The long-term goals are to promote economic growth for young people, the improvement of agriculture, and the creation of jobs.
Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, the executive director of KIC, spoke at the signing ceremony and expressed his excitement about the collaboration, saying it is a chance for the parties to take advantage of their individual strengths, experiences, and resources to create impact in attracting young people's attention and altering mindsets while generating employment opportunities.
"UENR serves as a center of excellence in the management and leadership of energy and natural resources. The agreement gives KIC the chance to engage more young people in entrepreneurship, innovation, and job creation, as our core mandate indicates, according to the organization's executive director.
Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, Vice Chancellor of UENR, stated that the university was committed to working in collaboration with relevant stakeholders who have the means and expertise to help students at the university and the region's young secure their futures.
The agreement with UENR is for a three-year term from 2023 to 2025, however, it is extendable on an annual basis. Through this partnership, KIC and UENR will work together to empower vulnerable communities and generate job opportunities to support a resilient agricultural industry.
Similar agreements will be signed by KIC with 4 more universities in 4 different regions this year, bringing the total number of regions covered from the previous year to 10 regions.
These universities include Bolgatanga Technical University in the Upper East Region, Takoradi Technical University in the Western Region, and Ho Technical University in the Volta Region.
University of Ghana-Greater Accra, University of Cape Coast-Central Region, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)-Ashanti Region, University for Development Studies-Northern Region, and University for Business Integration and Development Studies (BIDS)-Upper West Region are just a few of the universities that joined the KIC program last year.
By 2025, the program's influence is anticipated to be expanded across all of Ghana as part of KIC's partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, ensuring that more young people who are interested in entrepreneurship and agriculture are helped.
Additionally, the initiative supports Agri-MSMEs in all regions in their efforts to grow.
As part of the program expansion, KIC will negotiate comparable agreements with 6 additional universities in the remaining regions of Ghana in 2024.
The National Service Secretariat (NSS) and KIC also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to promote graduates' entrepreneurial abilities through the KIC mentorship program, in which graduates are allocated to KIC companies to work and learn entrepreneurship in a real-world setting.
