Ollie Watkins' late goal gave Aston Villa all three points after Southampton had two goals disallowed in the Premier League matchday at St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors won 1-0 and moved up to 11th place in the Premier League, just one point behind Chelsea and Liverpool, thanks to Watkins' header in the 77th minute.
In the first half, VAR ruled Kyle Walker-Peters' final touch to be offside; in the second, it overturned James Ward-goal. The ultimate determination of Ward-attempt Prowse's was delayed for a considerable amount of time while VAR evaluated a possible foul in the build-up.
Walker-Peters' finishing touch on a pass that Che Adams had headed in the direction of goal appeared to have given Southampton the lead in the 25th minute, but the play was called back for offside.
After a quiet start, that did energize the home crowd, but just before the half-hour mark, Gavin Bazunu needed to be alert to block a shot from Leon Bailey. The second half continued the first's pattern of few clear-cut opportunities and constant competition between the two teams for possession in the middle of the field.
In an effort to give his team some life in the 62nd minute, Saints manager Nathan Jones made three substitutions. He was almost immediately rewarded when Ward-Prowse scored the offside goal. The ball ultimately found its way to Ward-Prowse, who shot goalward and it deflected off Douglas Luiz to go in over the keeper after Villa were unable to clear it.
But once more, to the dismay of the home crowd, it was disallowed for a foul on Jacob Ramsey by Mohamed Elyounoussi. With just 30 minutes remaining, Watkins headed the ball past Bazunu off a Luiz free-kick to seal the victory. The goal was allowed to stand after VAR assessed to see if the striker was maybe offside.
