Chelsea have been the biggest spenders in the January transfer window, with six signings already this month. Joao Felix, Benoit Badiashile, and Noni Madueke have all relocated to West London as owner Todd Boehly attempts to improve The Blues' season.

Mikhaylo Mudryk has been the biggest transfer of the month, with Chelsea paying up to €100 million to Shakhtar Donetsk for the 22-year-old winger. Mudryk has been given a contract that extends until 2031, with reports claiming that this is to help Chelsea avoid breaking FFP rules.

These developments are said to have enraged UEFA officials, and Caught Offside has exclusively revealed that the governing body is planning to implement a rule that would limit players to five-year contracts at most.Barcelona has a history of awarding long-term contracts, with Lionel Messi receiving a nine-year contract in 2005. Both Atletico Madrid and Athletic Club have previously signed Saul Niguez and Inaki Williams to nine-year contracts.

However, it is likely that no clubs will be permitted to do so in the future.

Fans struggle to comprehend Joelinton's 'miss of the season

"Absolute Shocker":

Fans have had a hard time understanding Joelinton's incredible close-out "mistake of the season" before the Brazilian corrected it by scoring the Newcastle winner's goal against Southampton in Carabao's Cup. I'm having a hard time.

Joelinton disallowed first-half goal after controversial handball decision

The Brazilian has scored just four goals against Southampton this season

The 26-year-old has taken on deeper roles under Eddie Howe.

Newcastle striker Joelinton blushed as he missed his open goal in his 1-0 victory over Southampton in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Fans on Twitter clearly struggled to understand how the Brazilian missed when he scored from six yards out.

The Magpies star had already dismissed a controversial handball call goal before missing it from close range, but later scored the only goal of the game from a similar distance.

Joelinton managed what many fans are calling the 'miss of the season' against Southampton

The Brazilian was at the heart of the action for his side, who secured a slender lead for the return leg at St. James' Park next Tuesday, with the Magpies now just 90 minutes from a first cup final since 1999.

But viewers on social media were still unable to get their heads around his howler – although he did later manage to get on the scoresheet, with many speculating that it might go down as the worst miss of the season.

One fan wrote:

'Thats the miss of the season from Joelinton. Absolute shocker…'

The Brazilian later scored the only goal of the game to give his side a slender advantage

Another agreed, saying:

'Joelinton with the miss of the season.'

A third echoed the sentiment by stating:

'Joelinton with the miss of the season, tournament and year. My word.'

A fourth viewer suggested that the miss was evidence for his slight change of position into a deeper role, adding:

'And that's why Joelinton isn't allowed to play up front anymore…'

The 26-year-old fired well over the bar from only six yards out in the 53rd minute of the game

Another viewer was also quick to comment on his original position up front when the club signed him from Hoffenheim, saying:

'Wow. Joelinton was purchased as a forward. Imagine. '

One fan claimed that for the 26-year-old, all the hard work has already been done.

"Oh my God, Joelinton gave it to him there."

And his seventh viewer was visibly shocked, writing:

"Joelington missed a tap," followed by him two surprised emojis.

Joelinton also ruled out a first-half goal after his VAR decision for a controversial handball.

The forward improved significantly under Eddie Howe after a difficult start to his life at St James' Park and succeeded in deeper roles.

However, he managed only 4 goals and 3 assists in 24 games in all competitions for the Magpies in 2022-23.

But while he may be left with flashbacks to his egregious mistake on Tuesday night, he'll at least find solace in the fact that his goals ultimately made a difference. Fans on Twitter were stunned after the late 26-year-old's missed approach
