Liverpool will benefit as Jürgen Klopp makes fundamental and overdue change he won't enjoy
Jürgen Klopp has made an important tactical change to face Chelsea this weekend.
During Jürgen Klopp's tenure at Anfield, his notoriously high pressing was a hallmark of his intense and attacking style of football. Before things calmed down, the Germans instructed their players to flock to their opponents to get the ball back and start attacking immediately.
"Gegenpressing" was a term associated with the game when he arrived on the English coast, meaning "counterpressing" in German and effectively summed up his unusual offensive plan. It's no exaggeration to say that he favored proactive defense. For years, Liverpool dominated European football alongside Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Klopp has established a distinct identity at the club and high pressing is at the heart of his ideas.
However, this approach has not been as effective this season. The Reds were too fragile and were easily cut when trying to steal the ball in the final third.
Klopp instructed his players to press as usual, but considering how much his regulars over 31 have aged over time, including James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara. Is not.
Fabinho, who is 29 years old, looks more tired and sluggish than ever. Nabi, who has just turned 28, seems to have lost some of his natural energy and mobility as a result of his Keita having suffered countless injuries over the years.
In addition to his struggles in the engine room, the likes of Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz have all been sidelined due to fitness issues, and each of these forwards has been adjusted to suit Klopp's impending opportunities. Without them, Liverpool are ill-equipped to carry out these tactics.
Crop high press is not working as well as it should. This explains one of the reasons why Liverpool are currently ninth in the Premier League standings, 21 points behind Arsenal. The Reds bosses have maintained a bold approach throughout the season so far, but recently it seems they finally realized the need for a belated change.
In Liverpool's final game against Chelsea, Klopp appeared to instruct his players to embrace a deeper press than usual, and instead of using the usual high blocks, Anfield's side were forced against the Blues. I adopted more medium his blocks.
They didn't press as usual, so they stayed compact and together for a long time.
This was a welcome change, and although attacking play in his area did not go as planned, Liverpool managed to concede a goal. Only fifth of the 19 possible Premier League games of the season. Klopp isn't keen on imminent changes, and fans may not recognize their team for the next few months, but adjustments are needed to temporarily plug the hole in the team's pending summer refurbishment. I'm late.
It was just a game, but then
