Claims that certain students, notably former Commonwealth Hall occupants, have been left stranded on campus as a result of the implementation of the new housing policy have been refuted by the management of the University of Ghana.
The administration said in a news release that the alleged students who claimed to be stuck on its campus are people who have been recruited to gain media attention to depict the school in a negative light to the general public.
According to the statement, one of the people who was being exploited to get media attention was detained by campus security and admitted during questioning that he had been tricked into pretending to be a lost student of the school.
The Management of the University of Ghana has learned that certain dishonest people are persuading students and other people to assume the identity of stranded former Commonwealth Hall students.
"One of these individuals, who was being utilized to garner media attention, was detained by university security and admitted to unlawfully residing in Commonwealth Hall throughout the previous academic year.
He acknowledged that he had been convinced to pose as a lost student and spend the night of January 16, 2023, in front of Commonwealth Hall in order to attract media attention. He has been turned over to the police for additional inquiries, according to a portion of the statement.
All former legitimate occupants of Commonwealth Hall and male students of Mensah Sarbah Hall have been given housing at UGEL halls on the university's campus, the statement continued.
Management reassures the public and parents that all male students enrolled in Mensah Sarbah Hall and legal residents of Commonwealth Hall have been properly given rooms in UGEL halls. Additionally, measures have been put in place to help students who genuinely struggle financially to pay the residential costs for the UGEL halls, according to the Statements.
