The National Democratic Congress (NDC), according to its national chairman, thoroughly considered altering its parliamentary leadership.
According to Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the economy will be a major issue in the election of 2024, thus the party must present itself in the best possible light.
He said that the party's pre-election messaging will focus heavily on the economy, which is why it decided to rearrange its leadership in Parliament.
He said in a speech on Tuesday that the new leadership's skill set will best help the party in Parliament spread its message. "The economy will be a key issue in the 2024 election, therefore it will be the main topic of discussion. Therefore, if your party is genuine about seeking to win an election. To prevail in the discussion, you must put your best foot forward.
"You cannot just state that the economy is in ruins while failing to send your experts to explain to Ghanaians how you intend to improve the situation.
We thus placed our financial and economic experts there since this is the time when they are needed, according to Mr. Asiedu Nketiah.
There have been several changes to the NDC's present parliamentary leadership. As the new Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has replaced Haruna Iddrisu, according to the party. Kofi Armah Boah, an Ellembelle MP, will take over for James Klutse Avedzi as the Deputy Minority Leader.
As Chief Whip for the opposition, Kwame Agbodza will be replaced by Ahmed Ibrahim, a Banda member, and Comfort Doyo Ghansah, a lawmaker from Ada.
However, several NDC lawmakers have voiced their disagreement to the choice, calling the event a "coup d'etat" and challenging the decision's justification.
One of them, Tamale Central MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, claimed that the timing of the party hierarchy's decision was "inappropriate."
The audibly incensed member said that, in his and other NDC colleagues' opinion, the current generation of legislative leadership has been diligent in their jobs when speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosiisen the same day.
Therefore, he questioned the change's justification and criticised the party's leadership for doing so without first consulting the whole Minority Caucus.
"The time is just off. What justifies replacing the leadership of our parliamentary body? criticised Murtala Mohammed.
