According to Divisional Officer Grade Three (DOIII) Ruth Tandoh, the Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Bono Region had 202 fire breakouts that destroyed property worth GH699,170.

The area saw 207 fire breakouts in 2021, she claimed, totaling GH432, 302 worth of property and possessions lost.

She said that the main types of outbreaks were bushfires, household, industrial, vehicle, institutional, and electrical fires.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, DOIII Tandoh claimed that in 2022, there were 51 home fires, one of which resulted in death and four of which resulted in burns of varying severity.

She continued, noting that three individuals were saved by the service and that in 2022, the cost of salvage was GHC11, 675 as opposed to GHC4, 996 in 2021. According to DOIII Tandoh, fire breakouts continue to have severe repercussions.

He urged the public to prevent fires, especially household ones, by turning off all of their electrical appliances before leaving for work. According to her, "it is more often than not fire victims who postpone calls to the service when there is an epidemic," dispelling the popular impression that firemen purposefully delayed responding to fire outbreaks.

According to DOIII Tandoh, the public is not familiar with the service's emergency phone number and occasionally dials the erroneous number, which causes the service's arrival to be delayed.

She warned people against making unauthorized electrical connections, which were also a major factor in household fire outbreaks, and reminded them that the dry season had arrived and that they needed to be cautious about how they managed naked flames to prevent outbreaks.

In addition to urging the public to make an effort to alert the service as soon as there was an outbreak, DOIII Tandoh added that "every family, institution, office, and the driver must buy fire extinguishers since it is extremely vital."

When a fire breaks out, the general population must also make an effort to offer an emergency escape so that they can be saved.
