Lionel Messi breaks silence on angry World Cup row with Manchester United star Wout Weghorst
Argentina captain Lionel Messi interrupted the interview to target the Dutch striker.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi admitted his emotions ran high as he got involved in a heated argument with Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst at the World Cup.
It was a winter to remember for the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner and his Argentine teammates in Qatar, as the South American team won the trophy despite losing their opening match. But it hasn't been without controversy along the way, involving PSG's often-disappeared superstar.
Weghorst threatened to spoil their World Cup duty in the quarter-finals when he was called on from the Dutch bench to score twice in a closely contested match. Argentina rallied to win this match and performance on penalties.
However, after referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz showed 14 yellow cards and even sent off Dutch player Denzel Dumfries at the final whistle, it wasn't over as Messi fought a TV camera battle with United in the form of a giver. Borrow Weghorst, 30, to learn about the weight of a temper flare.
Messi, who previously played for former United manager Louis van Gaal in the Netherlands squad, is said to have called Weghorst an "idiot" in the mixed zone. Exiting his now infamous interview, Messi said:
"What are you looking at? Go back there."
But what prompted the 35-year-old former Barcelona icon to take this course? Messi was forced to exchange in an interview with Argentina's Infobae. In it, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner says:
"Everything happened naturally, in fact a lot happened on the pitch with this player [Weghorst] and a few others.
"When there is tension, friction, confusion, when the game becomes like that, the referee always has a fever. He was in the melee area and the game just ended. Well, now I know it all."
