Chelsea news, exclusives and analysis

The Argentina international has become a Premier League record signing after completing a £106.8m (£121m) move to Stamford Bridge on the final day.

Benfica was adamant not to sell the 22-year-old, but Chelsea eventually convinced them to pay around 10pm on Tuesday - giving them just two hours to complete all the paperwork after submitting an agreement.

That's why Chelsea had to complete a transfer so quickly, Fernandez passed a medical in Lisbon and didn't fly to the UK until Wednesday morning.

He has now filmed his first interview with the club's media team and posed for pictures in the club's kit, while choosing his new shirt number. The number 24 holds a very special place in Fernandez's heart as he wore it during Argentina's World Cup winning campaign, but is now being looked after by Reece James at Chelsea - he has had to look elsewhere.

He also wore the number 13 shirt for Benfica and River Plate, but is currently worn by number 3 goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.

As a result, Fernandez has decided to hand over the number 5, who has just been released by Jorginho - who left Arsenal on the last day of a £12m transfer.

The number is not said to have sentimental value to Fernandez, but it is a fitting choice for the Premier League's most expensive player, who has also been worn by Frank Leboeuf and Michael Essien.

As well as making his official debut photos in Cobham on Wednesday afternoon, Fernandez also met with club staff for the first time. Fernandez's transfer fee surpasses the £100m Manchester City spent on Jack Grealish in 2021 - that was the previous British record - and he will make his debut in Chelsea's next home game against Fulham on Sunday. Friday evening.
