A new Panamera was incorrectly listed for a bargain price of 124,000 yuan, or approximately $18,000, at a Porsche dealership in China, despite its actual price of 998,000 yuan (roughly $18,421).
It shouldn't come as a surprise that the dealer in Yinchuan, China, started getting a lot of deposits right away from anxious customers hoping to get a great deal. Bloomberg first reported the advertisement, which was clearly too good to be true, but that didn't stop people from trying.
The dealer jotted down the information and admitted his error as soon as he realized what had occurred. The embarrassing circumstance was almost immediately reported to Porsche's Stuttgart, Germany, headquarters. Additionally, users of the Chinese social media platform Weibo were evidently dissatisfied when the dealer made the correction.
Porsche, on the other hand, decided to make an effort to right the wrongs in order to steer clear of any further controversy. It "negotiated an agreeable outcome" for the one Panamera the dealer had in stock and reached out to the first person who made an online reservation. It didn't go into more detail, but it's clear that one lucky person got a pretty good price, though not $18,000.
Porsche went above and beyond to help other potential online buyers by personally contacting them to apologize and explain what had happened. Within 48 hours, it promised to refund their reservation fees.
With sales of a staggering $6.2 billion in the first half of 2022, Porsche is a well-known automaker in China.
In the world's largest automotive market, the German automaker sold nearly 94,000 vehicles throughout 2022. This was down from nearly 96,000 units the year before because of pandemic-related supply chain issues. In 2022, Porsche set a sales record in the United States.
China has been Porsche's single biggest market for a long time, and that is probably not going to change. There, it has been selling cars for more than two decades. With 95,604 units sold in 2022, the Cayenne is the manufacturer's most popular model worldwide. With 86,724 units delivered, the Macan SUV, which is smaller, comes in second.
The legendary 911 sold 40,410 more units than the Panamera, compared to 34,142. The number of Taycans delivered decreased 16% from 2021 to 34,801, while 18,203 Boxsters and Caymans were sold.
