CHELSEA LEFT-BACK AMONG CITY’S SUMMER TRANSFER TARGETS
Manchester City are reportedly set to sign Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell in the summer transfer window. According to Times journalist Paul Hirst. Chilwell, 26, is one of the targets on manager Pep Guardiola's list after current left-back Joao Cancello loaned the club to German champions Bayern Munich in the January transfer window.City had previously been interested in a former Leicester player for 2020, but Leicester's ratings failed to earn him the Englishman's services.
Worryingly, Chilwell has only played 68 times for Chelsea since he joined Stamford two and a half years ago. In the 21/22 season, Chilwell made 13 appearances, scoring 3 goals and 1 assist. Amazing numbers for a full-back. In his appearances so far this season, Chiwell has scored one goal and provided two assists in his 14 appearances. Injuries are a concern, with a cruciate ligament injury causing him to miss 178 days for 21/22, and a hamstring problem that has already missed 89 days this season.
When perfectly fit, Chiwell is impressive in transition, using his speed and stamina to join attacks and his traversal ability to find teammates. With a player like Erling Haaland it could be an interesting dynamic. The most striking similarity between Chilwell and Guardiola's system is his ability to combine his passes with teammates to break opponents' presses and move forward. Chilwell can certainly switch balls quickly and effectively.
It will be interesting to see if City acquire Chilwell this summer, but if the 26-year-old can stay healthy, he could be a solid choice for the Blues.
