Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli has signed a new contract with the club until 2027.

The 21-year-old's previous deal was set to expire at the end of next season, but in a big boost for Mikel Arteta's side he has agreed a new four-and-a-half-year contract with the option for an additional year.

Martinelli has scored seven goals in 27 games for Arsenal this season.

The Brazil international, who featured for his country at the World Cup in Qatar, has 25 goals in 111 matches in all competitions since joining from Brazilian side Ituano in July 2019.

On Martinelli's new deal, Gunners sporting director Edu said: "It's great that Gabi has signed a new contract with us. The foundations of our squad continue to be built on young talent, so it's great that Gabi has signed a new contract.

"Gabi is still just 21, and a player with big ability and personality. He is an important part of our future and we're delighted that we have agreed a new contract."

Manager Arteta added: "We're delighted Gabi has signed a new long-term contract. Our supporters see his quality and energy every single time he puts on the shirt and he's the same every day in training, with his hard work and positive values.

"Gabi is still very young, so we know there's still much more to come from him and it's great that we'll be on this journey together. We're now excited to continue to develop his huge talent and look forward to seeing him perform with Arsenal in the years to come."

#Blackburn set to launch an appeal against the EFL after the league rejects two deadline day deals

Blackburn has filed an appeal against the EFL's choice to deny two transfer requests on deadline day.

Lewis O'Brien of Nottingham Forest and Ethan Brierley of Rochdale were reportedly targets for Rovers, but the transactions weren't completed in time.

Blackburn plans to appeal to the EFL after seeing both applications denied.

One of the agreements was a highly ambitious aim, and it wasn't until late Tuesday afternoon that it was confirmed that he could join us, according to a club statement on Blackburn's website.
'Despite the club's best efforts to complete all the necessary components of this loan transfer, due to events we believe to be outside of our control, the deadline for submission was late, and despite the club's articulation of the mitigating circumstances for the delayed submission, the EFL has today rejected our application.'

Our application for the second deal—the permanent transfer of a talented young player—was likewise put off because of incomplete documentation and technical difficulties the club ran into when submitting it.

"Once again, the EFL has denied this application and has not acknowledged that these problems prevented the paperwork from being submitted on time.

The club will now file an appeal against the English Football League's decision to deny both petitions, and it will do so before the deadline on Tuesday, February 7.

The team led by Jon Dahl Tomasson is now sixth in the Sky Bet Championship and will play Wigan on Monday night.
