Chelsea signing ‘worries’ Allardyce as pundit claims Boehly ‘doesn’t know anything about football’
Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has explained why he is "worried" about Chelsea signing World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.
The Blues have been busy in the transfer market over the past two seasons. They have comfortably become the biggest spenders in world football, as around £550m has been spent by club owners since the end of the 2021/22 campaign.
Todd Boehly's consortium completed a takeover of the club last year and they have been quick to weigh in on the transfer market.
Their January madness was quelled by the addition of Fernandez on the final day. According to reports, the Argentina international transfer fee is a UK transfer record of around 121 million euros.
Fernandez has enjoyed a phenomenal rise in the past two months. He only joined Benfica last summer from River Plate and he shone for Argentina at the World Cup winning the title for the third time.
But Allardyce believes signing Fernandez is a "big risk" for Chelsea.
“Chelsea signing Enzo Fernandez worries me,” Allardyce said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast. "What if it doesn't work? It's an eight-year commitment, because obviously the league hasn't closed this loophole yet.
“It was £106 million; it's a big risk for the club, and especially for the manager, who will be blamed if it doesn't work out. I don't think Fernandez is his choice.
“I doubt this player is his first choice, but that is the way it operates at the moment. You're not really the coach anymore, you're just a coach, and you accept these players and try to do your best with them.
Meanwhile, former Ajax and PSV coach Aad de Mos has criticized Boehly, claiming the Chelsea boss doesn't know the basics of football.
“Todd Boehly knows nothing about football. If you want to waste your money do like Todd Boehly, he has no feeling for top sport and definitely not football, they think they can do it that way but it's also could be his downfall,” De Mos told soccernews.nl.
"I think the Chelsea boss is just watching from the US and saying, 'Okay, he's a good player, I heard that from him, go buy that player.'
“He doesn't know what a defensive midfielder is. Or a number eight, or a number ten. Americans don't know that.
“They come from a different world, they come from the world of basketball, and from the world of ice hockey and baseball, they think football is the same. But football is very different, very special and the new Chelsea boss will experience that.
