Erling Haaland was repeatedly snubbed by his team-mates as Manchester City put in a lackluster performance in the first half of their Premier League clash with Tottenham.

Gary Neville has criticized the Manchester City stars for failing to free Erling Haaland during their lousy performance against Tottenham.

City lost 1-0 in north London after Harry Kane scored at half-time following Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's brilliant combination to win the ball in the visitors' final third. The Englishman's strike was his 267th goal for Spurs and helped him overtake White Hart Lane legend Jimmy Greaves as the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

It was a typical Tottenham counter-attack, who had less than three possessions in the first half but took advantage of Man City's mistake to take the lead. Riyad Mahrez hitting the crossbar was the closest team to score Pep Guardiola, while Haaland was especially quiet at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The prolific 22-year-old Norwegian international was not helped one bit as he failed to serve. Neville pointed this out while co-commenting Sky Sports, criticizing the City players for 'ignoring' Haaland's runs behind the Spurs defense and along the canals.

"Haaland is shopping, he's ready to go, they (Man City players) don't play with them," said the Manchester United legend. “The number of runs he missed was unbelievable. Neville's remarks were echoed by Micah Richards and Graeme Souness on set, but City continued to struggle to get Haaland on at the start of the second half.

Manchester City's Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland cuts an increasingly disappointing figure at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Guardiola deployed the defending champions in a new scheme for the trip to north London, with Haaland leading the way with Argentinian World Cup winner Julian Alvarez. The Man City manager placed Mahrez and Jack Grealish on the flanks and a midfield duo consisting of Rodri - who was at fault for letting the ball go too far from Spurs' goal - and Bernardo Silva.

Alvarez and Haaland started as City took a two-goal lead to beat Spurs 4-2 in January, but the team's form was different that day as the former played deeper. The Sky Blues lacked a No 10 style player against Spurs on Sunday, especially when Kevin De Bruyne was named on the bench.

The Belgian was brought on just before kick-off and Guardiola may have regretted his decision to replace him initially. The match became increasingly chaotic over time, as Grealish was involved in several scuffles with Tottenham right-back Emerson Royal.

City have seen twice complaints about the hopeful penalty being canceled for handball just before the 65th minute as Spurs continued to pose a serious threat on counter-attacks.
