Despite being on a six-man transfer list, Erik ten Hag blocked Harry Maguire's exit.

Erik ten Hag prevented Harry Maguire from leaving Manchester United during the January transfer window as Inter Milan attempted to lure the defender away from Old Trafford.

Despite having Harry Maguire on a six-man transfer list ahead of the summer transfer window, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag blocked his loan move to Inter Milan.

The 29-year-old was courted by the Serie A giants in January, who offered him a path back to regular first-team action after falling out of favor at Old Trafford. Maguire has started just four Premier League games this season and is ranked fourth in the pecking order behind Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof.

Maguire was heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan or Premier League rivals West Ham, but Ten Hag snubbed a move for the England international. According to The Sun, United manager Jose Mourinho has promised Maguire more chances to reclaim his starting spot after refusing to let him leave.

However, it is believed that Ten Hag has named Maguire as one of six players who will be allowed to leave at the end of the season. Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, and on-loan players Alex Telles and Eric Bailly are also on the list.

If the England international decides to leave the Red Devils, he will no doubt have a number of suitors, but he could still play a significant role at United between now and the end of the season. Ten Hag may need Maguire to fill in if he changes his starting lineup, though Varane and Martinez are expected to play the majority of the time.

United have plenty of opportunities to rotate their squad because they are the only English Premier League team still competing in all four competitions, having advanced to the Carabao Cup final later this month. Before the next international break at the end of March, the Red Devils could play up to 13 more matches.

Ten Hag will need to use the majority of his squad to keep his most important players fresh and out of danger of injuring themselves in the red zone. Christian Eriksen, a regular in the United squad this season, suffered a serious ankle injury in the win over Reading and will be out until at least the end of April.

Ten Hag will be keen to ensure that none of his so-called star players, including Marcus Rashford, who ended up scoring his 19th goal of the season in Saturday's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, experience the same fate. United have now won their last 13 games at Old Trafford.
