STAYING IN THE FIGHT: ALAN KYEREMATEN'S QUESTION AND THE NPP'S CONUNDRUM

The iceberg is where the Titanic is headed. The ship's captain, along with a small group of senior crew members, can see the oncoming threat from the bridge. The peril that lies ahead is absolutely unknown to the passengers.

The decision is between the captain and his senior crew jumping ship immediately to save themselves or staying to get everyone safely off the ship, trying to avoid the calamity and the risk of dying in the process.

Three members of President Akufo-Addo's cabinet who wanted to succeed him as president were faced with that dilemma.

The choice fell to the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Agriculture Minister, and Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen.

The economic situation in Ghana is at its worst in a generation. If a bailout request is not approved by the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by the end of March, the economy would soon completely collapse, much like the Titanic.

Do you, a member of the cabinet with aspirations to become president, leave the government at this time to devote all of your attention to your campaign, or do you stay and work to get Ghana approved by the IMF Executive Board in the hopes that doing so will at the very least help avert an economic catastrophe and put Ghana back on the road to recovery?

Additionally, keep in mind that the risk of staying until the very end was high, similar to the Titanic. Your chances of becoming president are severely diminished if the government falls because you were a member of the cabinet that oversaw Ghana's economy's total collapse.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Alan Kyerematen ultimately decided to leave the group. The one thing that might hurt their prospects of winning over NPP delegates at the primaries the most is the timing of their resignation.

There is little doubt that this is the government's worst time, and consequently the NPP's as well. Regardless matter who wins the party's presidential primary, Dr. Bawumia, Dr. Afriyie Akoto, and Mr. Kyerematen in 2024 will undoubtedly be unopposed if the economy tanks and the Sri Lankan scenario came to pass in Ghana. That's why they ought to make sticking to assist in resolving the issue their top priority.

You don't desert your team during its most trying time for reasons of political legitimacy and credibility. I'm afraid that's exactly what Dr. Afriyie Akoto and Alan Kyeremanteng accomplished.

especially for the previous Minister of Trade and Industry. Since he quit, he has been the candidate who has been the loudest during the campaign. Delegates could view his choice to speak to the country and advocate policies that, in some cases, are in direct opposition to those of the administration he just left at a time when his party and government are at their lowest point as unhealthy political opportunism.
