Atsu Christian: Christian Atsu, a former Newcastle winger who also played for Ghana, is still missing following Monday's earthquakes in Turkey and Syria; Former Newcastle winger Christian Atsu remains missing after an earthquake in Turkey, despite previous reports that he had been rescued, according to the Hatayspor director on Wednesday.

There had been reports that the 31-year-old had been rescued.

Atsu's Hatayspor director Volkan Demirel told Reuters on Wednesday that the player had not been found even though it was announced on Monday that he had been pulled from the rubble and taken to a hospital as a result of the massive earthquakes that have devastated parts of Turkey and Syria.

Demirel stated, "There is no information on his whereabouts yet, we do not know where he is." He was not taken out or taken anywhere else, as is not the case."

Demirel added that the search for Atsu is ongoing. After spending nearly a decade at Chelsea and Newcastle United, the Ghanaian international signed with Hatayspor in September 2022. Hatayspor plays in the Turkish Super Lig.

After teammates and members of the club's technical staff were said to have been pulled from the rubble, Atsu was reported missing.

In the early hours of Monday morning, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake and a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northern Syria and south-eastern Turkey, killing over 10,000 people.

After joining Newcastle on loan from Chelsea for the season, Atsu later made the move permanent and was a part of the team that won promotion back to the Premier League in 2017. Additionally, he had brief temporary stints at Bournemouth and Everton.

After making 121 appearances for the club, Atsu left St. James' Park in the summer of 2021. On Sunday, he scored late in the final minute to win the game 1-0 over Kasimpasa.

The earthquake that struck Turkey on Monday resulted in the death of goalkeeper Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan.

On Twitter, the news was confirmed by the 28-year-old's club, second division Yeni Malatyaspor.

"The earthquake caused the collapse of our goalkeeper, Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan, to take his life. They wrote, "Peace be with you." Beautiful being, we will never forget you."
