Alphonso Davies finally got Lionel Messi's shirt after years of waiting, dream come true
Alphonso Davies finally got his hands on Lionel Messi's shirt following Bayern Munich's win over PSG in the Champions League, two and a half years after the Argentinian was 'too sad' to swap shirts.
The Canadian full-back was rejected by Messi in August 2020, when Bayern scored eight goals against Barcelona in a memorable Champions League quarter-final.
After that Camp Nou game, Davies failed in his quest for his final memory. "I asked for it but I think he was a bit annoyed," the left-back told BT Sport. "I'm fine, I hope next time."
But more than 900 days later, the 22-year-old finally got the shirt he had always dreamed of. As you can see in the photos below, Davies looked delighted as he made his way into the Parc des Princes dressing room alongside teammate Thomas Muller.
Here's how fans reacted to the moment.
One person said:
"The best thing that happened in this match is that Alphonso Davies received the Messi shirt after 3 years," while another wrote:
"Alphonso Davies taking Messi's shirt was actually taking drugs, he finally realized it."
A third person commented:
"Alphonso Davies is probably happier getting Messi's shirt than winning tonight."
Davies is a big fan of the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner. When asked if he watched the Champions League growing up, the Canadian player told a wonderful story about a phone call with his father about Messi.
"I went to a football academy, so around noon every Wednesday or Tuesday:
00 hours Edmonton, we'll see it as a classroom," Davies told UEFA. "All the players were there, cheering for whoever they wanted to win. It was amazing, and to be playing in the Champions League now, against one of my favorite players on the planet. world [Lionel Messi], it's amazing. Honestly, I'm speechless - a dream come true.
"My mom called me yesterday, then my dad picked up and said:
"So you're playing against your favorite player, I get it." And I went:
'Yes.' And then we both started laughing on the phone.
"Honestly, we couldn't even believe it, because he knew I admired Messi when I was little, and now it's great to play against him."
A goal from former PSG player Kingsley Coman helped Bayern Munich to a crucial 1-0 win in Paris ahead of the second leg of the round of 16 on March 6.
