Newcastle United, Christian Atsu's previous team, has paid respect to the late winger who was discovered following a 12-day intensive search.

After a nearly two-week search for him in the wake of two earthquakes that struck the southeast of Turkey, the 31-year-old was found dead in the quake debris of his collapsed residence.

After joining the Turkish Super League squad from the Saudi club Al Raeb in the recent offseason, Atsu was making his professional debut.

The group tweeted on its Twitter account:

"We are really grieved to discover that Christian Atsu unfortunately perished in the horrific earthquakes that hit Turkey. He was a special guy in addition to being a gifted athlete, and our players, staff, and supporters will always remember him with affection. Peace be with you, Christian."

Atsu initially signed a loan agreement with Newcastle before deciding to stay there permanently in May 2017.
