Barcelona face competition from Inter Milan, Bayern Bayern, Atletico Madrid for French winger
According to SPORT, Barcelona is not alone in its pursuit of Borussia Mönchengladbach star Marcus Thuram. They will be up against Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, both of whom are interested in signing the winger on a free transfer.
Thuram will leave Gladbach on a free transfer in the summer, four years after signing, according to club director Roland Virkus, who said: "We have to accept that there are bigger clubs where Marcus might go."
The Frenchman could be a two-way solution to Barcelona's problems. One, with Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres struggling, Xavi's left wing has become a problem.
Thuram would not only be an excellent replacement/competition for the Spanish duo, but his ability to play as a centre-forward makes him an ideal long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Furthermore, he would not put a dent in Barcelona's wallet, which appears to be under fire already.
Thuram is one of the Bundesliga's most prolific forwards this season, with 11 goals and three assists in 20 Bundesliga appearances. He only has four fewer goals than Barcelona's own Lewandowski.
Despite competition from Inter, Bayern Munich, and Atletico Madrid for him, Barcelona appears to be the favorite to sign him, thanks to his father, Lilian Thuram, who played for Barcelona. Marcus himself attended FCB Escola as a child.
"If you give me the contract, if you have it, I'll sign it. What matters is that Marcus continues to develop as a footballer. But it would be a dream," Lilian Thuram said when asked if his son could sign for Barça.
As things stand, the 25-year-old can sign a pre-contract with any club he wants. However, before making a formal offer for the player, Barcelona will need to resolve their financial and registration issues.
