When fully loaded, its price is very close to that of its Alfa Romeo Tonale cousin, which is more expensive.
An order guide discovered by Cars Direct appears to have leaked the unofficial pricing for the Dodge Hornet R/T, the plug-in hybrid version of Dodge's new compact crossover. This reveals a powerful performer with a not insignificant initial capital outlay.
Compared to the current top trim, the plug-in hybrid is quite a step up. The entry-level PHEV will cost $41,590, while the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder GT Plus costs $35,490 (including destination). The most powerful R/T Plus is expected to retail for $46,590. However, once you select a few options, these prices may rise.
However, the vehicle is not yet available, and dealers won't see it until a few months after the base GT trims are introduced. The Hornet R/T's packages and options are largely identical to those of the GT models, with a few price differences based on the equipment that comes standard on the higher trims. For instance, the R/T Blacktop Package is said to cost $1,595 as opposed to $1,995 for the GT trim. Different sources appear to have different numbers, and Dodge has made it clear that the final price has not been confirmed. Even with these alleged costs, a fully loaded plug-in hybrid Hornet R/T will set you back somewhere around $54,000 when you add the Blacktop Package, Tech Pack, and Track Pack with adaptive dampers, larger wheels and tires, and upgraded interior trim.
An electric motor, a 15.5-kWh battery, all-wheel drive, and a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder power the R/T. Dodge claims that the powertrain can travel 30 miles on electricity alone and produces more than 285 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.
But is the package as a whole worth it?
The Alfa Romeo Tonale, which is its close sibling, will also be its primary rival. Alfa Romeo's Tonale, in contrast to the Hornet's multi-engine approach, is only offered as a PHEV and starts at $44,995 for the Ti and $47,495 for the Veloce. On the entry-level Tonale, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel will be standard, while on the Veloce, adaptive suspension and aluminum shift paddles mounted in the column will be standard.
Despite the fact that the Tonale is a luxury crossover and the Dodge is considered mainstream, the "in class" part of Alfa's claim is more significant.
Even though the specifications and packages of the two brands are different, equipping a Tonale with all of the advanced driver assistance features that are available—20-inch wheels, ventilated leather seats, and an upgraded Harman Kardon sound system—brings the price up to approximately $56,000. The prices of these two crossovers are remarkably similar, considering that the stunning Verde Fangio (green) Tri-Coat Exterior Paint costs $2,200.
