Jurgen Klopp explains what went wrong for Liverpool in Real Madrid defeat
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted his side couldn't keep up with Real Madrid as they were beaten 5-2 at Anfield on Tuesday.
Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool an early lead but they were leveled 2-2 at half-time, then the visitors went wild and scored three goals to end the game effectively.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Klopp admitted he had a lot of lessons to learn from the defeat.
"The start was excellent," he told BT Sport. “In short, it's us. It was perfect, just the way we wanted to play. The whole first half went well besides the goals.
"The first goal, we were a bit passive in the further half, we didn't chase them. The second goal was a foul. It shouldn't have happened, it could have happened, 2-2. "The first interval [after the break] they passed the ball long to Vinicius. I don't know if it was a foul or not. The way we defended was not good. After that it was 3-2. and that doesn't help a team that's playing well, especially on the counter-attack.
“We can't go back to the track anymore. You need to play like the first half for 95 minutes, but you need to get motivated again.
"At 3-2 it was the opposite. They became more confident and scored great goals. One person was deflected. That's how it is. It's strange. I also have a lot to learn from it.
"We have five or six players and there is no challenge [for any goal]. That can't happen. We were passive until the ball got there. "The only way to slow the game down a bit is to keep the ball. We started the second half losing the ball in some weird moments. That space [for the third goal] was impossible but it was. why the score is 3-2." We had to keep the momentum and there we lost it and we didn't recover it. "We're going to go there and play a football game. It's going to be a big challenge. But first we have to play in the Premier League and make sure we learn from this game."
Liverpool have until March 15 to prepare for the trip to the Santiago Bernabeu, before which they will face Crystal Palace, Wolves, Manchester United and Bournemouth.
