FC Barcelona must start planning for the coming months. The summer transfer window is always a time for clubs to change their squads, and the Catalan giants will have plenty of players to choose from. So which five positions should the Blaugrana sign in 2023?

First of all, the club must target an experienced, top-class centre-back. Barcelona have had some problems at the back this season, so signing a reliable defender is key to stabilizing their defence. Moreover, the right-back position also needs to improve, Barcelona can target a talented and experienced signing.

Offensively, the Blaugrana could benefit from strengthening the attack with a goal-scoring winger. Barcelona needed a player who could provide speed and creativity on the wing as well as contribute in front of goal. Another player Barcelona should target is a box-to-box midfielder. Having an effective midfielder to act as a bridge between defense and attack is a must, so Barcelona should look to bring in one. Ultimately, the Catalan giants should invest in another goalkeeper. Barcelona have all the pieces for a formidable attack, but their defensive structure also needs to be strengthened if they are to have any chance of challenging for the title. Signing a reliable goalkeeper is a must for the club.

De Jong's Barca decision vindicated before Man United game

On Thursday, he will lead the Barca midfielder against the Red Devils and his former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag to Old Trafford, where he could have played this season had it been known that his move he is reasonable. Ten Hag is keen to reunite with the 25-year-old, while Barcelona's financial situation means they will be happy to deduct De Jong's salary and charge a hefty transfer fee.

However, De Jong remains at home in the Catalan capital, even as compatriot Ronald Koeman has been replaced in Barcelona attack by Xavi Hernandez, less convincingly by the midfielder, signed in 2019 from Ajax for 75 million euros. De Jong went to his dream club, as his partner Mikky Kiemeney revealed on social media, where she posted a picture of the player in 2015 at Camp Nou, visiting as way a fan.

However, the move turned into a nightmare as Barcelona faced a sporting, financial and institutional crisis, with coaches Ernesto Valverde, Quique Setien and Koeman all sacked. Xavi arrived and many hoped that one of the best midfielders of all time would be able to help De Jong progress. However, often dropping him out early, Xavi seemed frustrated that the midfielder could not fit his 'positional play' pattern.

De Jong wants to function as the deepest midfielder, the role Xavi has for Sergio Busquets, leaving the Dutchman with no choice but to move forward. However, even though his move to United is '95% complete', according to a report from Spain this summer, he is still trying, determined to win over the Barcelona manager and assert himself at the club. where he always hoped to reach.

De Jong accuses Barcelona of disclosing his contract details to the media, and is frustrated that questions have been raised about the validity of his deal, signed during Josep's disastrous days. Maria Bartomeu as president. "I find it really annoying that the club does this," De Jong said last November.

"Complete Player"

Xavi's switch to a four-midfield formation in 2023, instead of the traditional 4-3-3, solved the mystery of De Jong. Able to play alongside Busquets in midfield rather than in front of him, De Jong could see the game in front of him and influence it. He also has the ability to push forward at the right time without fear of leaving space in midfield. De Jong is no longer expected to be the next Busquets - instead, he is seen as an additional player. The Spaniard picked up an injury during the Europa League play-off first leg but Xavi says he is fit to return in the second leg. With Pedri injured and Gavi suspended at Old Trafford, De Jong's importance to Barcelona this week is greater than ever. "What's important is the confidence we have in him, how he feels, he's happy and very important in the team," Xavi said recently. "He's a complete player."

When De Jong was knocked out early against Cadiz on Sunday as the La Liga leaders won to restore their eight-point advantage, he received a standing ovation from the fans. It's a very different feeling for the frustrated fans - and the player himself - felt last season in his performance, or the disappointment evident on his face after the that early withdrawal. "I was hoping he would stay because in the end, he's the type of player I want in my team," goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen said ahead of the 2-2 draw with United at the Camp Nou. "I'm glad he's here. I don't want him to leave."
