A profile on John Mahama the former President of Ghana
John Dramani Mahama is a Ghanaian politician and statesman who served as the fourth President of Ghana from 2012 to 2017. He was born on November 29, 1958, in Damongo, Northern Region, Ghana.
Mahama attended Achimota School, Ghana Secondary School in Tamale and then proceeded to the University of Ghana, Legon, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1981. He then furthered his education at the Institute of Social Sciences in Moscow, Russia, where he earned a postgraduate degree in Social Psychology.
Mahama started his political career as a member of parliament for Bole-Bamboi Constituency in 1996. He served as Deputy Minister of Communications from 1997 to 1998, and then as Minister of Communications from 1998 to 2001. He also served as the Minority Parliamentary Spokesman for Communications from 2001 to 2004.
In 2005, Mahama was appointed as the Minority Parliamentary Spokesman for Foreign Affairs, and in 2008, he was appointed as the Minister of Communications again, this time under the administration of President John Atta Mills. In 2009, Mahama became the Vice President of Ghana, serving under President Atta Mills until Mills' death in 2012, when Mahama assumed the presidency.
During his presidency, Mahama focused on improving the country's infrastructure, with initiatives such as the "Better Ghana Agenda" and the "Ghana Vision 2020" project. He also worked to improve education and healthcare, and to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Mahama ran for re-election in 2016 but was defeated by current President Nana Akufo-Addo. However, he remains a significant figure in Ghanaian politics and continues to be involved in various social and political initiatives.
In addition to his political career, Mahama is a writer and has authored several books, including "My First Coup d'Etat: And Other True Stories From the Lost Decades of Africa" and "The Voice of Freedom." He is also a recipient of several honors and awards, including the Order of the Elephant of Denmark and the Millennium Excellence Award for African Leadership.
