Sergio Ramos on his decision to retire from International football and the Spanish national team
Sergio Ramos, the legendary Spanish defender, announced his retirement from international football and the Spanish national team today .
The announcement came after Ramos was left out of the Spanish squad for both the Euro 2020 tournament which was due to an injury that kept him out of action for a significant amount of time and the Qatar World cup this year. The 37-year-old made the announcement on his social media platforms, saying that it was a difficult decision but one that he felt was necessary.
Ramos had been an integral part of the Spanish national team for over a decade, winning the European Championship in 2008 and 2012, as well as the World Cup in 2010. He had also been a regular fixture in the team, amassing 180 caps, making him the most capped player in the history of the Spanish national team . His contribution to the national team was immense, and his leadership qualities were often praised by his teammates and coaches alike.
Ramos' decision to retire from international football doesn’t come as a surprise to many, given his lack of playing times at PGS due to injuries. However, Ramos cited the new coach Luis de la Fuente told him he did not count on him as the main reason for his retirement. He said that he wanted to extend his career for as long as possible but was sadden by the decision of the Coach hence the reason to retire.
The defender wrote on his social media wall “This time has come, the time to say goodbye to the national team, our beloved and exciting Roja” he added “This morning I received a call from the current coach who told me that he does not and will not count on me, regardless of the level I can show or how I continue my career.”
He continue “With much sorrow, it is the end of a journey that I hoped would be longer and that would end with a better taste in my mouth, at the height of all the successes we have achieved with our Roja”
Will the retirement of Ramos from international football leaves a huge void in the Spanish national team, especially in defense. Ramos was known for his commanding presence on the field and his ability to organize and motivate his teammates. He was also a goalscorer, having scored 23 goals for the national team, a remarkable feat for a defender.
Ramos' retirement also marks the end of an era for the Spanish national team, as he was one of the last remaining players from the golden generation that won the World Cup in 2010. His leadership and experience will be missed by the younger players who are now expected to take over the reins of the team.
Sergio Ramos' retirement from international football and the Spanish national team is a loss not only for Spain but also for the football world.
