The Geely Auto Group has launched a new flagship brand for its upcoming high-end electrified vehicles. The range will include long-range hybrid and battery-electric vehicles, which will be referred to as the Galaxy series.
Galaxy unveiled the two models that will lead the pack as part of the announcement. The Galaxy Light is a fully electric concept that most likely serves as a preview of the range of models that will be released under this new brand. On the other hand, the Galaxy L7 PHEV SUV appears to be ready for production.
Within the next two years, Geely Galaxy will introduce seven brand-new automobiles. The remaining three of these products will be entirely electric, while four of them will be long-range PHEVs.
In the second and third quarters of this year, shipping of the Galaxy L7 and L6 (sedan) will begin. The first all-electric model will be the E8, and production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2023.
The only thing Geely said about its all-electric models was that they would be equipped with its brand-new Aegis battery safety system. The battery pack is adequately protected not only in the event of a direct impact during a crash by this new system, but also from factors that shorten its lifespan. Aegis is able to anticipate and avoid a variety of situations that shorten battery life, including thermal runaways. Battery life is said to have increased by 20% as a result.
A battery's current lifespan is estimated to be between 100,000 and 200,000 miles, which means that the best-case scenario calls for an additional 40,000 miles. However, Geely did not provide estimates of the E8's range, and it is likely that they will only provide this information closer to the E8's launch.
Geely Auto's NordThor dedicated hybrid engine makes the PHEV models far more intriguing at the moment. Geely claims that its NordThor 884 model has a peak thermal efficiency of 44.26%. The typical thermal efficiency of an ICE engine is only 25%.
Geely claims that the NordThor three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission, which is mated to this impressive engine, provides the best performance and fuel economy combination. The large L7 can reach a top speed of 125 mph in 7.5 seconds thanks to the engine and gearbox. The claimed 45 mpg fuel economy, according to Geely, is most impressive. The L7 can travel 856 miles on a single tank with a full tank.
Now, we always be skeptical of claims of this kind. In addition to the flawed standard fuel consumption tests in China, Chinese manufacturers have a history of laying it on thick.
The brand-new Galaxy N-Operating System will be included in all Galaxy models. Geely creates and constructs its own chips, operating systems, intelligent cloud computing, satellite networks, and other components. The system is supported by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8155 vehicle chip.
Additionally, Geely has its own satellite network, ensuring that the navigation systems will be precise to the tenth of an inch. Intelligent driving features like automatically adjusting the suspension for a forthcoming corner benefit from this. The Geely Group will launch additional satellites until there are 72, providing global coverage for the Galaxy range. We wonder if the United States is included in the term "global." Probably not because Geely doesn't need the United States because its home country is the biggest market for cars in the world.
Li Shufu, a Chinese billionaire, owns The Geely Group, which is not publicly traded. In an effort to save established manufacturers, Shufu has issued a number of blank cheques over the years.
The group currently owns Volvo, Lotus, Polestar, and Zeekr, a brand-new and exciting startup.
Fortunately, Geely does not directly manage the aforementioned businesses. It simply provided these floundering businesses with the funds they needed to get back on track, and all of them have done so far. However, Galaxy may be able to access the parts bin if they begin repaying Geely at this time. Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus are likely to be heavily influenced by Galaxy. Even though the new gearbox was developed, the PHEV models will probably use powertrains from models like the S90 Recharge. Galaxy is likely to acquire electric vehicle motors and battery packs from Polestar, as the company focuses on electric vehicles.
Interesting to note, Geely has introduced a luxury brand before. Emgrand was launched in 2005, and it was shut down in 2014. We were unfortunate enough to drive the Emgrand EC7, which felt like an abused Toyota Corolla of the 10th generation.
