Manor Solomon promotes role to start at Fulham
Life transcends football. A year ago, Manor Solomon was suddenly awakened in Kiev. Turns out the noise was a Russian air strike.
After consulting with comrades in Shakhtar Donetsk, Solomon fled to the Polish border. From there, after 10 long hours, he was flown back to Israel. Solomon is one of the lucky ones. Twelve months later, war is raging in Ukraine. But his life is very different.
His second-half presence gave Fulham the opener after Pablo Sarabia's opener.
And as an hour passed, Solomon cut in from the left, Craven Cottage feeling together something special. Israel's most promising player made it, surging past Jose Sa completely horizontally to equalize.
"It's kind of a closure for me," he said. “But it doesn't close the door for them. I feel sorry for them. I hope it will be completed as soon as possible. I wish them all the best. My heart is with them.
Solomon is in London under FIFA rules that allow Ukraine-based foreign players to extend their contracts until June 2023. His contract is technically temporary, not on loan. Fulham are the beneficiaries.
A serious knee injury that occurred shortly after his debut means he is yet to start in the top flight. But after scoring three times in a row as a substitute, that certainly won't be for long.
“That makes me very special,” he said of the presence of his parents, both gym teachers. “My dream came true when I scored for the first time in front of my parents in England.
"They always supported me. When I was young, they always tried to give me the best tools to be the best football player possible. They have always supported me, they have always been good to me and I am grateful to them.
Wolves may consider themselves unhappy. Their goal was both beautiful and well deserved as Sarabia stepped in after a nod from Raul Jimenez.
But again, the lack of luxuries proved costly. Jimenez hit a header off the post in the second half, they should have doubled the lead. And Wolves' 352-day wait for a goal from a centre-back in the league continues.
