Liverpool need a centre-back and Manchester United are said to have expressed an interest in a $51 million Serie A star who could become the new Virgil van Dijk.
Replacing a player like Kalidou Koulibaly has never been an easy task for Napoli, but the Serie A leaders, who destroyed Liverpool earlier in the campaign, have done it.
The Senegal international has been a mainstay of the defense at Napoli for so long that it seems unlikely he will ever leave. He has made his mark on Napoletani's heart and mind and has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world over the past five years.
But then he left. Napoli's title challenge last season collapsed in early spring when the old problem of Napoli's mental weakness resurfaced.
Also part of the title slump in 2018, Koulibaly saw enough, and although Napoli offered him a lucrative contract to stay, he still wanted to leave and so was sold. for Chelsea.
Half of that money went to replacing him, with Napoli signing Korean defender Kim Min-Jae from Fenerbahçe, and now Napoli fans have forgotten all about Koulibaly. Roundabout way, Liverpool can finally be grateful that Chelsea completed their transfer last summer.
It was unsettling that Min-Jae easily slipped into the heart of Napoli's defence. He had only played one season in European football - last season in Turkey - before moving to Serie A, but you wouldn't know it because of the quality of his games.

Forming a superb partnership so far with Amir Rrahmani, Min-Jae is arguably the best defender in Serie A this season, and has been immortalized at Napoli, with a mural of his save. him against Milan at the San Siro, denying an almost certain goal. for Brahim Díaz, adorning a wall in the city's 'Spanish quarter'.
Tall, aggressive, nimble and barely able to lap or run, Min-Jae's performance for Napoli was reminiscent of Virgil van Dijk in his infancy for Liverpool. He won the Serie A Player of the Month award in September and has scored twice. By his own admission, he did not expect such a start to life in Italy.
Filling the void left by Koulibaly for Chelsea is certainly difficult for Min-Jae, but he ups the road. He performed brilliantly in the first match between Napoli and Liverpool in Napoli, leaving Jürgen Klopp's attack unusually quiet.
Napoli's Kim Min-Jae in the Champions League earlier this week. The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester United (via the Daily Mail), and Liverpool should keep an eye on him, especially given all the club's current centre-backs are struggling. towel. in a period of time. Corriere dello Sport has again linked Manchester United to a move and says they have a $51m (£42m/€48m) release clause.
In many ways, Min-Jae would be the perfect replacement for Van Dijk, given their similarity in style. Napoli are unlikely to sell after just one season but things could be different a year from now, although his transfer value will only increase over the next 12 months if he continues to play.
