Todd Boehly, owner of Chelsea, reportedly indicated interest in purchasing Strasbourg of the Ligue 1.

Chelsea owners 'in talks' to buy another European club

Todd Boehly, owner of Chelsea, wants to acquire a Ligue 1 team. Strasbourg

Roman Abramovich placed the club up for sale when he was sanctioned in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the American tycoon finished his buyout of the Blues at the end of May.

Boehly, who already shares ownership with the Los Angeles Sparks and Los Angeles Lakers in addition to the Los Angeles Dodgers in baseball, is looking to grow his sports business. He has discussed a potential takeover with Marc Keller, president of Strasbourg, who has been in charge of the French team since 2012.

Boehly and his associates are reportedly interested in purchasing a 100% stake in Strasbourg, according to L'Equipe. The team is now 15th in the rankings after winning four of their 24 games this season in the first tier of French football.

Boehly reportedly wanted to investigate the possibilities of purchasing a club in Brazil in September of last year after being rejected by Santos.

And in December, there was discussion about potential prospects to acquire numerous French clubs, with Sochaux reportedly having previously rejected Boehly. And it looks that the American is now focused on Strasbourg.

There are no restrictions on owners purchasing organizations in other nations throughout the world, despite the fact that they are not permitted to own more than one team in England. To prevent clubs with the same owners from competing against one another in European championships, UEFA has rules in place. But when he addressed the subject last year, Boehly mentioned various multi-club models.

Chelsea mocked by rivals

Having previously experienced financial difficulties and being liquidated in 2011, Strasbourg was forced to restart in the fifth tier. However, the team returned to the professional game in 2016 and was promoted to Ligue 1 in 2017. Les Bleus et Blanc, who have only ever won one Ligue 1 championship, would definitely benefit much from a partnership with a team as major as Chelsea.

Since his group acquired Chelsea last summer, Boehly has spent lavishly, putting close to £600 million into the team. Graham Potter's team is mired in 10th place in the Premier League, so that investment has yet to bear fruit.
