In Bawku, Rev. Stephen Wengam advocates for peace.
Rev. Dr Stephen Yenusom Wengam, the new General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church of Ghana, has urged all relevant stakeholders to work tirelessly to find a lasting solution to the conflict in Bawku.
Rev. Wengam used his maiden address following his induction ceremony on Saturday, February 25, 2023, to appeal to factions in the Bawku conflict to yield to the persuasive influences of traditional authority and opinion leaders in order to ensure that peace returns to the area.
According to him, the conflict in Bawku has the potential to tarnish Ghana's peaceful reputation in Africa if a lasting solution is not found soon.
"With great interest, we note the withdrawal of the court order issued for the arrest of the new Bawku Naba. This development does not obscure the fact that the Bawku conflict is potentially corrosive to Ghana's reputation as the most peaceful nation in West Africa and second in the whole of Africa".
"No effort should be spared in containing the hyper-sensitive and supremely complex situation which threatens to cascade into security challenges of unthinkable proportions. For the sake of these, and in the name of God, we make a heartfelt appeal to all parties involved in the Bawku conflict to yield to the persuasive influences of traditional authorities, opinion leaders, prominent citizens, peace activists, security experts, and religious figures, while pragmatic moves are made to find a solution.
Rev. Wengam also pledged to work hard to make the Church more appealing to the youth and to ensure that the Assemblies of God Church plays an important role in the development of the country.
Several prominent pastors, as well as former President John Dramani Mahama and former Chief Justice Georgina Wood, attended the induction ceremony.
Reverend Stephen Yenusom Wengam, the lead Radio Pastor at Citi FM, was elected General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana at the church's 30th biennial General Council meeting.
Rev. Wengam, 50, is the senior pastor of Accra's Cedar Mountain International Church.
He takes over from Rev. Professor Yaw Frimpong-Manso who was General Superintendent of the church for 12 years.
Rev. Wengam took office on Monday 5th September 2022 at a handing-over ceremony held at the headquarters of the church in Accra.
