The 2023 Ford Transit line of vans, including the all-electric 2023 Ford E-Transit Cargo Van, will now feature digital rearview mirrors, which are becoming increasingly common on a variety of automobiles. Because cargo vans do not have windows, the only way to see behind them is through the side mirrors, so this may be one of the best vehicles for digital rearview mirrors.
Christian Kreipke, Ford's assistant brand manager for vans, stated, "Cargo van drivers frequently contend with an obstructed view of the area behind their vehicle." Imagine how difficult it would be to maneuver in a crowded parking lot or city street as a result. The digital rearview mirror is an extremely useful tool for delivery drivers, particularly those who frequently make multiple deliveries.
The system itself is comparable to that of other manufacturers, so Ford is not the only company to incorporate it into its vehicles. Even though it is impossible to see through the rear doors, a high-definition screen displays a panoramic view from behind thanks to footage recorded by a camera mounted on the vehicle's back. The digital mirror has a switch that converts it to a regular glass mirror, but this feature doesn't seem to matter in this application unless it's in a passenger van with windows.
Ford claims that the wide-angle rear camera has a view that is nearly twice as wide as a standard rearview mirror and is built to record continuously, even in inclement weather. The van becomes safer and easier to drive as a result of this increased visibility. We've used these mirrors on a lot of different vehicles, and we love how they can make it easier for the driver to see out the back, even on a sports car with a small window. These cameras should be implemented by more automakers, particularly in the new BMW 7 Series, which has a huge theater screen that blocks the driver's view.
