Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, the former CEO of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), fled to the United States in 2021 and has since refused to return for the trial. The Office of the Attorney General filed a request with the Accra High Court to hold the trial in Sedina's absence.
The accused is being tried for allegedly causing the state financial loss after she was given her passport so she could fly to the United States for a medical examination. The Office of the Attorney General requested that the trial be held without the accused by filing the application with the court.
On January 24, 2023, the court, presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, a Court of Appeal judge sitting as an additional High Court judge, ordered former GNPC CEO Alex Mould and actor Gavivina Tamakloe to pay GH5 million to the state for failing to turn over the defendant for whom they served as sureties.
Antecedent
Ms Attionu and Daniel Axim are accused of stealing, conspiring to steal, committing an unpermitted act that caused the government to incur financial obligations, making an inappropriate payment, money laundering, and violating the Public Procurement Act, among other offences, on 78 counts.
Daniel Axim's attorney had one hour to conclude the prosecution's cross-examination after seven witnesses had been brought by the prosecution.
