For the 2024 model year, Volkswagen has made a number of significant changes to its Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs. These changes go beyond just a few styling tweaks and include a complete overhaul of the interiors of both models, as well as the replacement of both of the previous engine options with a brand-new one.

The Atlas Cross Sport was found to be the least satisfying new car to own just a few days before the 2024 model's updates, so VW will be hoping that the upgrades put the Atlas on a more positive path.

The older Atlas had a base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that was not very powerful. Now, a turbo-four with more power replaces that engine and the VR6, which was an option. In contemporary crossovers, six-cylinder engines are still being phased out in favor of turbo-fours, as is the case with the most recent Toyota Highlander and Jeep Cherokee.

With a four-cylinder turbo direct-injection TSI engine, every Atlas model now produces 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque—a welcome increase from the previous four-cylinder's 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. The new engine is nearly as powerful as the previous VR6, but it is significantly quieter and offers more torque across a wider rev range. Although specific figures have not yet been released, Volkswagen claims that the 2023 model's fuel efficiency has improved, which is a weakness.

Front-wheel drive is still standard, and all-wheel drive is an option. The maximum towing capacity is still 5,000 pounds. We anticipate that the new Atlas will reach 60 in about seven seconds based on its outputs.

The SUV's MQB foundation and eight-speed automatic transmission have not been altered by VW. We have found the Atlas to have a smooth transmission and a comfortable ride, so it should come as no surprise that VW hasn't changed anything about the SUV that was already good.

In the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport's cabins, there will be even more significant modifications. The interior features leatherette-trimmed leatherette trim on the dash and center console in what VW calls a major upgrade. There is now a door trim that blends more seamlessly into the dash and a new design for the ventilation outlets, as well as a redesigned center console with a lower storage cubby.

The appearance of haptic buttons and sliders in place of the bulky climate controls won't please everyone. We found these
