The Student Loans Trust Fund (SLTF) has been urged to release unpaid loans owed to students around the nation by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).
The non-disbursement of loans to its members has been made known to NUGS in reports. According to NUGS, the students who are being delayed are facing several difficulties.
"... Several colleges have sent out letters to students alerting them to the approaching registration deadline; the University of Business and Integrated Development (UBIDS-WA) is one such institution.
Exams for the middle of the semester will start at KNUST on February 27, 2023. Regrettably, regrettable that a number of our students run the risk of being unable to take their examinations because they can't afford to pay their fees because of unpaid student loans, NUGS lamented.
Thus, the student advocacy organization asked the government to take swift action in resolving the present crisis in a statement released on Sunday, February 26.
"Our students across the country have complained to the National Union of Ghana Students about the failure to pay back student loans after many applications.
The fact that the arrears from the previous semester have not been paid is regrettable; given the current state of affairs in the nation, when students are unable to register for classes and complete their academic work, this poses a serious concern.
Parts of the statement stated, "At this time, about 70,000 students have applied."
Student loan delays are making people anxious, NUGS informs SLTF.
By issuing this declaration, we demand that the Student Loan Trust Fund and the government pay qualified student loan applicants right away. If loans are not paid off right away, students run the risk of deferment, the statement said.
Although it addresses their concerns, the union has urged all students to maintain their composure.
The statement, which was co-signed by the NUGS President, Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo, and Press Secretary, Emmanuel Yaw Gyimah, said, "The union begs students to calm down and calls on our various local secretariats on campuses with special and urgent situations to reach out to the National Secretariats for immediate assistance at info@nugs.org.gh/0241615737."
