In the United States, demand for this forbidden fruit remains high.
At Auto Expo 2023 in India, where the automaker also revealed its first production-bound EV yesterday, Suzuki has finally revealed a five-door version of its beloved Jimny off-roader. The covers were pulled off the longer-wheelbase variant.
The Jimny, now in its fourth generation, is one of the forbidden fruits of American off-road enthusiasts. Furthermore, and for good reasonIt is arguably even more capable than the large Gelandewagen, despite the fact that it appears to be a miniature version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. With a new long-wheelbase variant that adds two more doors, 13.4 inches to the wheelbase, and 13.8 inches to the overall length, the Jimny is now more practical than ever.
Due to its short wheelbase, the Jimny is one of the most capable off-road vehicles. Lengthening that wheelbase would lower the Jimny's breakover angle. Despite having only 8.3 inches of ground clearance, the Jimny's off-road figures still embarrass much larger rock climbers, with approach, departure, and breakover angles of 36, 50, and 24 degrees, respectively. The 1.5-liter, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder engine in the Jimny five-door produces 101 horsepower and 96 lb-ft of torque, making it the same powertrain as the three-door version. A five-speed manual gearbox or an out-of-date four-speed automatic transmission distributes power and torque to a part-time four-wheel drive system with a dual-range transfer case. We have driven the Jimny in its standard configuration, and we know that the motor and manual gearbox are adequate at low altitudes; however, driving at high altitudes makes one asthmatic. Avoid using an automatic transmission at all costs. However, the small off-roader will be significantly more stable with its longer wheelbase, particularly in its 2H drivetrain mode.
Importantly, the Jimny does not come with mechanical lockable differentials as a standard feature, which is a common first upgrade to boost its off-road capabilities. Instead, a "Brake LSD" function mimics an LSD by applying the brakes to a slipping wheel.
The interior has been greatly improved by adding more than a foot of length between the axles. Even though the Jimny is still a four-seater at its best, passengers in the rear seats now have a lot more room. In the reveal materials for the five-door, Suzuki mentioned "special rear seats," but these appear to be largely identical to the standard items from the shorter model. However, the front seats now have the ability to fully recline and lie flat, giving the Jimny enough room for two people to stretch out and sleep inside, similar to the new Ford F-150.
Although the interior is sparse, with a lot of grab handles and rugged hard plastics, it also has a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay technology, voice control, Bluetooth, and other modern technology. Push-button start, cruise control, and automatic climate control are also options.
The five-door Jimny will initially debut in India, but we anticipate a global rollout to additional markets, such as Latin America. Through these channels, American off-road enthusiasts can import a Jimny and will likely be able to acquire a five-door, albeit for off-road use.
The Jimny's body-on-frame construction, proper 4x4 system, and simple construction have made it a huge hit with off-road enthusiasts. Due to stringent new emissions standards, the fourth-generation 4x4 Jimny has been temporarily banned in Europe since its introduction. However, Suzuki subtly removed the rear seats to circumvent this, effectively making the 4x4 a "commercial vehicle."
