Today, Atsu's family will meet with Akufo-Addo to finalize funeral arrangements.
Today, Monday, February 27, 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to meet with the family of late Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu, Ghana Football Association representatives, and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, ahead of the deceased's final funeral rites.
Following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake, Christian Atsu's body was discovered beneath the rubble at his home in the Turkish province of Hatay.
His body was later returned to Ghana, where government officials, members of the football community, colleagues, supporters, and Ghanaians in general expressed their condolences to the bereaved family.
The deceased footballer will be remembered with a one-week memorial observation at Adjiringanor in Accra on March 4, 2023.
"We will call on the President on Monday," said Mustapha Yussif, Minister of Youth and Sports. Once we do that, the plan that the family has presented to the Ministry and GFA will be made public because it is subject to the president's approval. A funeral planning committee has also been formed to ensure an appropriate funeral."
The government has promised to work with the family to ensure that Atsu is properly buried.
Last Friday, discussions between the Atsu family, Ghana Football Association representatives, and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif were completed in preparation for the late footballer's final funeral rites.
Meanwhile, the family says it is incredibly grateful for the affection and support shown to them in the wake of the tragic passing of their relative in the devastating earthquake in Turkey.
During this difficult time, the Twasams are especially grateful to the government, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and Ghanaians.
According to Robert Ani, a family spokesman, the family's gratitude for Christian Atsu's death cannot be adequately expressed in words.
"The government's and Ghanaians' support has been overwhelming. First and foremost, I want to thank President Akufo-Addo for taking an immediate interest in the incident. The President has been extremely beneficial. We simply want to thank him, as well as Ghanaians. The outpouring of love has been overwhelming. People have been calling, visiting, and offering whatever assistance they can. So far, I'd say it's been overwhelming," he said.
