Govt to offer state-assisted burial for Christian Atsu.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that the government will provide Christian Atsu, a former Black Stars player who died in the Turkish earthquake, with a state-assisted burial.
The President stated that the news of Atsu's death has devastated the country.
On Monday, February 27, 2023, the family of Christian Atsu paid President Akufo-Addo a visit at the Jubilee House to officially inform him of the former Black Stars player's death.
Officials from the Ghana Football Association, led by its president, Kurt Okraku, attended the meeting.
"It is our responsibility to provide you with the necessary assistance. It will never be able to compensate for the loss of this brilliant man. I want the Chief of Staff...to make certain that we arrange a state-assisted funeral for Christian Atsu on the date agreed upon by the family and GFA. Everything will be done from the government's perspective to ensure he has a dignified exit. That is my duty and responsibility as president to ensure," President Akufo-Addo said.
In addition, the president urged Atsu's family to expedite the burial process.
"I'm not sure what your plans are, but I believe that the sooner we get this unfortunate episode out of the way, the better for all of us...With that said, the decision as to when the funeral will take place is still up to the family as our customs demand".
Christian Atsu was tragically trapped beneath the rubble of the February 6 earthquake that struck parts of Turkey and Syria.
On February 18, Atsu's lifeless body was discovered and returned to Ghana on February 19.
