The government intends to establish a marketplace for the manufacturing and marketing of gold articles - Jinapor.
Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor stated that discussions with Rand Refinery of South Africa, a London Bullion Marketing Association (LBMA) referee, are ongoing in order to secure LBMA certification to facilitate the export and trade of refined gold on the international market.
He also stated that the government intends to establish a Gold Souk in the country, which is a marketplace for the manufacturing and marketing of gold articles.
He also that the jewellery subsidiary of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) was able to produce gold tablets, engrave and plate jewellery "a major boost for their work".
"Going forward, the plan is to establish a Gold Souk, a marketplace for manufacturing and marketing of gold articles, here in the country," Mr Jinapor said on Tuesday, February 28 at a press conference in Accra.
Mr Jinapor stated that tracking excavators has been identified as one of the most effective ways to combat illegal small-scale mining (Galamsey).
He also stated that it repositions small-scale mining as a sustainable source of income for locals.
As the government ramps up its fight against galamsney, he said the Minerals Commission will install tracking devices on 4,000 excavators and earthmoving equipment.
For the past three months, we have successfully tracked 75 excavators. The commission was in a better position to bring 4,000 excavators and earthmoving equipment on board before the end of the year.
The minister stated that it was in line with the government's 2015 decision to reduce the withholding tax on unprocessed gold by small-scale miners from 3% to 1.5%.

The Damongo legislator stated that the Minerals Commission will install tracking devices on 4,000 excavators and earthmoving equipment as the government ramps up its anti-galamsey efforts.
Following the successful tracking of 75 excavators over the previous three months, the commission was better positioned to bring on board 4,000 excavators and earthmoving equipment before the end of the year.
The minister stated that it was in line with the government's 2015 decision to reduce the withholding tax on unprocessed gold by small-scale miners from 3% to 1.5%.
"As a result, gold exports from small-scale mining have increased dramatically, from 3,429.91 kilogrammes (Kg) in 2021 to 22,158.25kg in 2022.
