Due to Algeria's increasing dependency on petrol as a result of the conflict in Ukraine, the European Union has been strengthening its connections with Algeria over the past several months.
The European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, visited the North African country herself in October and remarked that "Algeria is a reliable supplier".
The praise for Abdelmadjid Tebboune's government has also risen from other member nations like France and Italy. But, in Putin's conflict with Ukraine, Algiers has emerged as a crucial ally of Moscow.
The Russian aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean is now Algeria. In recent months, joint military exercises between the militaries of Algeria and Russia have taken place, notably on Algerian soil close to the Moroccan border. In a same vein, the Algerian government is a significant sponsor of Putin's attack against Ukraine, as it is one of Russia's primary armaments customers.
Both the European Parliament and the US Congress have condemned this state of affairs. Following this, on November 16, 17 MEPs wrote to Ursula von der Leyen requesting that the 2005 association agreement between the European Union and Algeria be revised in light of the country's expanding ties to Moscow.
The General Assembly of the United Nations convened in special session on February 22 to approve a resolution that demands that Russia withdraw from Ukraine and "respect the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine" on the eve of the anniversary of the Russian aggression against that country.
Even yet, the resolution that was overwhelmingly supported is not enforceable. That is a useful thermometer for gauging global support for both Russia and Ukraine, though.
Putin's hostility for Ukraine forbids using any half measures. The lack of support for the resolution from Algeria confirms the tight ties between Moscow and Algiers.
Partnering with Algeria is unreliable. In response to Russian aggression, the European Union must be constant in its support for Ukraine and, as a result, reevaluate its alliances with Moscow's friends. The idea that we would simultaneously reinforce Kiev's army with public funds in order to defend the city while also deepening our relations to the aggressors' supporters is absurd.
