Liverpool's 'succession plan' revealed as Jacobs discusses Klopp 'removing' Salah or Firmino
Liverpool are said to be 'planning' when Ben Jacobs raised the prospect of the club 'getting rid of' Mo Salah or Roberto Firmino.
Salah and Firmino have been key to Liverpool's success under Jurgen Klopp over the past few years. They helped the club win the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Liverpool are currently in transition. Sadio Mane left the club last summer and the other players are expected to leave at the end of the year. The Reds will probably increase reinforcements in defense and midfield, but they have covered very well in attack. With Salah and Firmino, they have the choice between Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.
Jacobs reports that unlike Chelsea, Liverpool are "very consistent in their storytelling with the players".
Clearly a player like Gakpo is not going anywhere, Jacobs told TEAMtalk. "He just joined Liverpool and they like Jota at this stage too. Luis Diaz still has a certain role to play, so in theory it seems Liverpool have too many forward-thinking players, but they are versatile.
They can fit into different systems and lineups, and they're both good characters who are willing to buy spins. That's why Liverpool have so much stability.
"So while Chelsea have a great squad and everyone wants to play, Liverpool are very consistent in their story with the players.
"They understand their journey in the first team and they respect and appreciate the way Klopp chose to balance his squad."
Even so, Salah and Firmino are both linked with a move elsewhere. Salah has signed a new contract until 2025 but he will attract interest from Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Firmino is out of contract this summer and has yet to commit his future at Liverpool.
Jacobs added that Liverpool's intention is to 'bring in a younger star for the future' so they don't need to 'remove' Salah or Firmino.
"It's part of a succession plan for one or two older players like Salah and Firmino," Jacobs added.
"I don't think it's about the replacement, I think it's about the plan. So what Liverpool want to do is bring in a younger star for the future who could be part of a succession plan, rather than remove and then replace one of their big-name stars. .
"It's something that Liverpool have always done so well, they'll definitely go on.
They also had this smooth transition so they didn't have to rush into the market and rush to buy because a player suddenly left or they had a hole in their system.
"As a result, everything is very calm from Liverpool's point of view."
