Invest money in meaningful projects for Independence Day - Sophia Akuffo.
?Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has urged the government to use funds set aside for Independence Day celebrations to fund meaningful projects that will benefit Ghanaians.
She believes it is pointless to waste scarce resources on independence celebrations when the government is attempting to rescue an ailing economy.
The Volta region's capital, Ho, will host the national celebration of Ghana's 66th Independence anniversary on Monday, March 6, while other regions will hold their own durbars to mark the occasion.
Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of a public lecture on the country's 66th anniversary of independence, the former Chief Justice said that while commemorating the occasion is important, infrastructure projects and other investments would have better served the populace.
"We should celebrate our independence, but gathering and marching is pointless. Whatever money is spent on this celebration with everyone going to the Volta region, I believe it would be better if they chose a deprived district and built a new school, or a ramshackle district hospital or health center and upgraded it and named it Independence school or Independence hospital.
"Then they pick a region and a project and do it every year; that would be money better spent... This will benefit the people and will last, but they will talk, march, eat, and return, and that will be the end of it."

According to Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Education Minister, over 500,000 BECE graduates have been placed in various Senior High Schools across the country through the school placement system.
According to Dr. Adutwum, the number has risen significantly since the implementation of the free SHS policy.
Dr. Yaw Adutwum, speaking at the 2022 Presidential BECE awards in Accra, said the free SHS policy has created many opportunities for children to pursue secondary education.
"The Free SHS program has sent many students to various high schools throughout the country. There were 830,000 students enrolled in high schools across the country when it began in 2017."
"This year alone, we have a record 500,000 students placed in senior high schools across the country, and we are waiting forward for them to enrol. That shows how far we've come in the last few years."
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that the government will continue to implement policies and programs aimed at improving education in Ghana.
Nana Akufo-Addo said education remains a topmost priority for his government.
