On February 27, at MWC Barcelona 2023, MTN Group and Huawei signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance their strategic collaboration in the areas of governance, social issues, and the environment (ESG).

The Agreement was agreed upon during a meeting between the two parties at MWC Barcelona and is in line with both Huawei's TECH4ALL program and MTN's Ambition 2025 business goal.

Nompilo Morafo, Chief Sustainability & Corporate Affairs Officer at MTN Group, stated that partnerships are the best way to successfully implement innovative digital solutions for Africa's advancement. "By collaborating with businesses like Huawei, we can pool our technology and knowledge to promote increased connectivity, digital literacy, and environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions for the good of everyone."

Guo Ping, Chairman of the Huawei Supervisory Board, stated, "We think that digital technology will become a significant force driving social growth and making the world more equitable and sustainable.

The Huawei DigiTruck project offers free digital skills training to individuals in need, including those in remote regions, the elderly, those without jobs, and girls and women. DigiTruck, a mobile classroom fueled by solar energy and outfitted with computers, cellphones, and a 4G connection, was constructed from a repurposed shipping container and is installed on a truck.

Huawei ICT Academy is an additional initiative in the field of digital skills training. It provides ICT training for university students in areas including 5G, cloud computing, and AI. 1,900 Huawei ICT Academies are serving about 150,000 people in 110 countries.

The goal of MTN's Skills Academy is to strengthen the connection between digital skill development and labor market demands to benefit digital technology creators, users, and consumers. The alliance aims to quicken efforts to reach even more remote and rural regions and to increase the variety of digital skill training that is offered.

MTN is dedicated to growing its network to underserved regions and has set a target of 95% rural broadband coverage by 2025. A major percentage of Africa's population lives in rural areas. MTN's collaboration with Huawei advances the company's mission. The firm wants to increase the volume of partnerships and partnership models it now uses.

To provide remote and rural populations with inexpensive connections, MTN and Huawei are working together to implement RuralStar. The method gets beyond conventional obstacles that prevent carriers from offering network access in such circumstances and will expand cooperation between the parties, building on the success of the completion of the first RuralStar proof-of-concept in the world in Ghana in 2017.

In terms of lowering carbon emissions, Huawei will assist MTN in sticking to its promise to lessen its environmental impact and reach net zero by 2040. To reduce carbon emissions, the partners will collaborate to decarbonize the operator's data centers, storage facilities, transport networks, and Radio Access Network (RAN) locations. Network decarbonization will be accomplished via a combination of energy-efficient technology and the use of creative green solutions.
