Once it was officially opened for business on Friday amid much fanfare, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia turned the rebuilt Kumasi Central Mosque over to the mosque's committee.

The National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a host of distinguished dignitaries, including Ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, regional Imams, Zongo Chiefs, as well as leading Muslim and Christian clerics, attended the commissioning ceremony.

The fervent Muslim community from the Ashanti Region and beyond showed up in force to thank Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for what is being described as a really admirable act by donating a stunning piece of architecture.

Before Jummah prayers, the Vice President and the Asantehene gave the mosque its official commission.

The 7,000-seat mosque was completely full within minutes of being made accessible to the public, and numerous more people had gathered outside to worship.

When guests entered the mosque, others were observed crying with excitement and expressing awe at the building's incredible beauty.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY

Vice President Bawumia gave a speech during the occasion in which he claimed he started the project "to the glory of Allah" and thanked God for providing him the power and determination to finish it by himself.

"I am really appreciative to the All-Powerful Allah for providing me the insight, direction, and resolve to be able to embark on this significant job.  When I visited the mosque in 2020 and saw it need immediate care, the Almighty Allah touched me.

Being one of the nation's oldest mosques, the Kumasi Central Mosque embodies the vision of "our forebears," according to Dr. Bawumia, who also expressed his joy at the mosque's metamorphosis into a contemporary structure that is appropriate for Kumasi's reputation as a recognized city.

Cooperation between Asanteman and the Muslim community

In addition to praising the Manhyia Palace and Asanteman for their cooperation and peaceful coexistence with the Muslim community, Vice President Bawumia also acknowledged the contributions made by the Kumasi Central Mosque's founding fathers. He also praised Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II for his assistance to the Muslim community in the construction of the first Kumasi Central Mosque.

The Manhyia Palace was crucial to the construction of the first Kumasi Central Mosque under the rule of Asantehene Otumfuo Sir Agyemang Prempeh II, Dr. Bawumia remarked.

This amplifies how long-standing Asanteman's ties to the Muslim community have been and how much assistance and cooperation the Manhyia Palace, in particular, has provided.

"Before the reign of Otumfuo Sir Agyemang Prempeh, the Asante Kingdom is known to have worked with Muslims there. Subsequent Asantehenes have likewise carried on this lovely heritage."

The importance that the Asantehene and the Asante Kingdom place on the historical relationship are demonstrated by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's presence today.
