Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has been linked with Chelsea as a potential replacement for Graham Potter - but former teammate Emmanuel Petit has ruled out the possibility.
Zinedine Zidane has been linked with replacing Graham Potter in the Chelsea hot seat - but that possibility has been ruled out by former teammate Emmanuel Petit.
Zidane has been unemployed since leaving Real Madrid in the summer of 2021 and was linked with the Manchester United job last season. The legendary former midfielder often talks about his desire to return to coaching after two successful spells at Los Blancos.
Speaking earlier this year, Zidane explained in a rather coy interview about his future:
“Can I still deliver everything as a coach? Yes, many things, or I think at least some!
"I want to continue with this career because I still have a desire - it's my passion. I'm 50 years old, contented, I'm happy, that's the most important thing."
Blues coach Potter, who replaced Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge in September, is under pressure. His side have scored just 6 goals in their last 16 games and they are falling to 10th in the Premier League table despite record spending in the last two transfer windows.
However, Petit, a former Chelsea player and Zidane's central partner in France, has ruled out the possibility of the former Real Madrid manager moving to Stamford Bridge. Speaking to RMC Sport, he explained:
"I could be wrong, but I don't believe even for a second the rumors that Zizou is going to Chelsea.

Have your voice! Should Chelsea consider a management change? Tell us what you think here.
"Zidane's future is not in England, but elsewhere. Zidane has openly said that he prefers a more polished and technical style of play. He does not speak English, although I believe him. are taking lessons, but the dressing room now has many different nationalities. “Knowing how to manage his dressing room, he likes to be close, to take care of everyone before the player. And so you have to be able to communicate and speak that language. In England, many coaches were mocked at press conferences for not speaking the language, as in France. After a while, this creates ignorance.
Petit added:
“Why refuse Chelsea? Because if you look at it today, Potter has to manage more than 30 players training in what looks like a summer camp. “Chelsea have the means, but today the Financial Fair Play is looking at changing the law because of them, so we can be confident the club will not be able to continue at this transfer rate. [To qualify] Champions League will be necessary for them otherwise they will no longer participate in Financial Fair Play. Therefore, they will be doomed as they are 10th in the Premier League and they will not win the Champions League this year.
Petit then concluded his review with the condemnation of The Blues owner Todd Boehly. I said:
"It's Boehly's choice, but he doesn't understand football at all. If he just wants the glitz he's been doing for the past six months, there are other managers who know the Premier League much better."
